In February 2023, I embarked on an incredible journey that would shape both my personal and professional life. My name is Elise Hautekier, and I am a 22-year-old occupational therapist with a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy as well as a bachelor’s degree in Special Education. Currently, I work at an outpatient rehabilitation centre for children with developmental disabilities. My passion for working with children was solidified during my internship in South Africa. It was a life-changing experience that I would love to share.

A unique Opportunity in South Africa

From the moment I arrived in South Africa, I knew I was about to experience something extraordinary. The country’s vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm-hearted people immediately captivated me. But beyond the beauty, I was also exposed to the complexities and challenges of healthcare delivery in an environment vastly different from my home country.

During my internship, I had the privilege of working at Die Sterreweg, a daycare center in Plettenberg Bay that provides care and therapy for children with special needs. The center serves as a vital source of support and encouragement for many families, offering essential support through a dedicated multidisciplinary team. Despite facing limited resources and various challenges, the team at Die Sterreweg is committed to making a difference in the lives of the children they serve.

Gaining Practical Experience

One of the most memorable aspects of my internship was witnessing the progress of

the children over time. Seeing a child who initially struggled with motor coordination improve through therapy sessions was incredibly fulfilling. It reaffirmed my passion for this field and emphasized the impact that occupational therapy can have on a child’s development, even in other countries such as South-Africa.

My role at Die Sterreweg allowed me to work closely with children with different developmental disabilities. I assisted in providing occupational therapy interventions adapted to their individual needs. These included sensory integration activities, fine and gross motor skill development, and play-based therapy sessions. The experience of adapting my therapeutic approaches to fit each child’s unique needs was both challenging and rewarding.

The Importance of Cultural Awareness

One of the biggest lessons I learned during my time in South Africa was the importance of cultural awareness in healthcare. Being engaged in a different cultural and socio-economic environment required me to approach each child and family with empathy, understanding, and adaptability. It reinforced the idea that effective therapy is not just about applying clinical skills—it is about truly connecting with people and respecting their unique backgrounds.

Moreover, working in a setting with limited resources taught me how to be creative and resourceful in my interventions. I learned to adapt therapy techniques using available materials, proving that meaningful progress can be made even with minimal tools.

A Life-Changing Experience

Returning home after my internship, I experienced a revitalized sense of drive and commitment. Not only had I gained valuable clinical skills, but I had also grown as a person. My time in South Africa deepened my understanding of global healthcare disparities and fueled my passion for making a difference, particularly in underserved communities.

For anyone considering an internship or work experience abroad, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the chance and just do it. Studying and practicing occupational therapy in South Africa was an adventure that shaped me in profound ways. It was a journey of learning, growth, and connection—one that I will carry with me forever. After two years, this is still the biggest adventure in my life and I would do this all over again. Go for it and live your life! I am so grateful for the chance and the great experience.
